CHARITY heavyweight mayor Bob Copland has already outboxed all recent rivals in the fundraising ring – now he’s bringing in the big guns to tip the scales as a record-breaker.

For Nuneaton and Bedworth’s civic champion has called in the town’s Mr Charity – ‘Mighty’ Mick Emanuele – for The Main Event later this month.

La Tavola Calda restaurateur Mick is staging a charity show that’s guaranteed to be a knockout success for Councillor Copland whose Mayor’s Appeal 2013-14 has already belted out a staggering £30,000 for his chosen charity – Bedworth-based People in Action.

The fundraiser at the UK’s premier tribute emporium in Midland Road, Nuneaton, will combine melody, magic, memorabilia – and more besides, Mick promises.

“They’ll be sounds, a silent auction, a touch of the supernatural as well as some super food,” said Mick, who for 33 years has always punched above his weight for good causes in the town.

On the ‘Charity KO’ bill is a galaxy of local artistes headed by Bedworth’s New Faces winner Johnny Rickard, legendary entertainers John Hart and Ray Moss, Detroit superstar tribute act Motown Devotions, Olly Murs tribute act Andy Hammersley plus a full house of Tavola compere hosts – Traci Hanson, Louise-Claire Rayner, Megan Cleary and Ben Murphy.

Someone who will need little introduction is Coventry Magic Circle and Leamington and Warwick Magic Society member Mick McCreath. Better known as the Midlands number one boot fair boss at Measham, Mick will provide a cabaret spot plus table magic during the evening’s entertainment.

And topping and tailing the charity extravaganza is Galley Common’s Celebrity Memorabilia boss Bob Mooring who’ll present a silent auction of fascinating framed and signed artefacts from the world of crime, politics, showbiz and sport.

Likely bidding items include House of Commons mementoes from the ‘Beast of Bolsover’ MP Dennis Skinner; FA Cup memorabilia from the 1950s; Dr Who 50th anniversary presentation displays; signed banknotes from the Great Train Robbers; and boxing gloves from undefeated world champion Joe Calzaghe.

“It will certainly be some main event,” said the 67-year-old borough mayor. “They say variety is the spice of life – and it will be at La Tavola on that night.”

Councillor Bob Copland is bidding to break the record for a civic appeal – held by former mayor and MP Bill Olner who raised a bumper £40,000 to kick start the building of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice in Nuneaton.

He has until the first few days in June of his mayoral term to raise another £10,000 for his pet charity which helps more than 500 adults with learning difficulties across the Midlands.

  • Proceeds from the event on Wednesday, January 29 will go to Nuneaton & Bedworth Mayor’s Appeal 2013-14 in aid of the Bedworth-based People in Action charity. Doors open at 6pm. For tickets, priced at £15, call 07796 084672.
